National Service and Volunteerism

Beginning in 2001, The Statewide Independent Living Council of GA (SILC of GA) embarked on a new outreach initiative funded by the Corporation for National Service in Washington, DC. National service is a movement that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to help solve community problems.

The initiative is an outreach effort to people with disabilities to participate in National Service and/or volunteer opportunities. National Service programs consists of AmeriCorps State and National Programs: AmeriCorps VISTA Programs, Senior Corps - Senior Companions, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and Foster Grandparents; as well as Learn & Serve Programs.

Many of the centers that serve Georgia are now committed to referring people with disabilities to volunteer organizations and National Service programs. The participating centers are also available to community service organizations to identify or provide technical assistance regarding the inclusion of people with disabilities in community service. National Service and volunteerism is an incredible opportunity for individuals with disabilities who have the will and desire to serve the community.
