A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

If you’re anything like me, the end year is a wonderful time to reflect on the successes and disappointments of the past year and look forward to what’s to come.

I find myself thankful for the collaborations with the SILC Board, staff (family), GA legislators, partners, and supporters, I am fortunate to be in the company of compassionate and knowledgeable leaders.

Throughout the year, SILCGA has been able to maintain a high level of engagement through external communications on various online and social media platforms. Our website remains an active hub of information, our new Spanish website has over 35K hits in just 2 months, our Podcast generates an episode monthly, and our Facebook & Instagram pages have become a strong conduit for connectivity.

Though recent times may have proven to be stressful to body, mind, and spirit, there remains hope. Therefore, when we return at the changing of the calendar year, we will be ready to do even more. We will also be looking for our community partners and supporters to help us collectively build and strengthen the Independent Living Network!

Please remember those who are near, far, and no longer with us. Celebrate life, recharge, and consider joining us in 2024!

Wishing You All Merry Christmas!

Best,
Shelly Simmons

Welcome to Our New Housing Policy Coordinator

SILCGA warmly welcomes Victor McRae as our new Housing Policy Coordinator. Victor is a committed professional who brings a unique perspective to his role, being visually impaired with Stargardt’s disease, a form of juvenile macular degeneration. He graduated from Georgia Southern University with degrees in Business Administration, focusing on Management and Marketing. His professional journey includes impactful work at Verida as a Travel Trainer, where he assisted people with disabilities in using public transportation for their medical appointments.

In his role at SILCGA, Victor will focus on understanding and addressing the challenges in fair housing faced by individuals with disabilities. He will engage with organizations and individuals to identify gaps in housing policy and public awareness. Victor’s commitment extends to advocating for changes alongside policymakers and housing development groups, aiming to bridge legislative frameworks with the real housing needs of the disabled community.

Victor steps into his role at SILCGA ready to apply his unique insights as an individual living with Stargardt’s disease, along with his professional background, to enhance fair housing initiatives for those with disabilities. He is set to identify and address critical challenges in housing policy, drawing upon his experiences and strong communication skills. By collaborating with a network of stakeholders, Victor aims to advocate for and contribute to policy improvements, ensuring accessible and equitable housing solutions.

Georgia Transit Authority Annual Conference

This year the Georgia Transit Association held its annual conference. The conference was held in Athens and provided a variety of vendors and speakers. This allowed attendees to connect with their local transit authorities and discuss transit policies, potential collaborations, and continuing innovation. This year our mobility coordinator Jordan Hall presented at the conference with Bennett Foster from the Atlanta Regional Commission regarding the ITS4US transportation project. Trains were also offered for conference attendees. The Georgia Transit Association Provides members with the opportunities to stay connected on transit initiatives statewide.

Georgia Council for International Visitors Holiday Party

We were graciously invited to the Georgia Council for International Vistors holiday party on December 12. It allowed us to meet other participants in the program and brag a little about the SILCGA. SILCGA hosted two international groups this year – India and Poland.

New Podcast with Our Very Own Shelly Simmons

For many of our episodes of Accessibility Now, we’ve consulted the expertise of SILCGA’s Executive Director Shelly Simmons. Finally, we’ve spoken with Shelly about her own story — from California to Georgia, from TV commercial production to disability advocacy.
